Marrakech

Morocco's beating tourist heart, souks, palaces, mountain views, and a square that turns into a circus every night.

Why visit Marrakech

Marrakech is the easiest entry point into Morocco and the hardest to leave. The Jemaa el-Fnaa square, the maze-like medina, the Atlas Mountains 90 minutes away, it packs a country's worth of experience into a 5-day trip. It's also Morocco's most touristy city, which means easier logistics (airport, English-speaking riads, day trips) but more hustle.

  • Souk shoppers
  • Mountain access
  • Quick trips

Neighborhoods

  • Medina (old town)

Inside the walls. Riads, souks, Jemaa el-Fnaa. Where you should stay your first trip. No cars, porters with wheelbarrows handle luggage.

  • Gueliz (new town)

French-built, wide boulevards, modern restaurants, cocktail bars, art galleries. 10-minute taxi from the medina. Worth a half-day.

  • Hivernage

Upscale hotels and clubs. Walking distance to the medina and Gueliz. Quieter than the medina but feels less authentic.

  • Palmeraie

Palm-grove villas, golf courses, resort hotels. 20 minutes from town. For travelers who want a poolside retreat, not a street-level Morocco experience.

Top experiences

  • Jemaa el-Fnaa at sunset

Storytellers, snake charmers, food stalls firing up, the call to prayer over loudspeakers, this is the show. Eat from stall #14 (Hadj Mustapha) or grab a rooftop café (Café de France, Le Grand Balcon) and watch.

  • The souks

Spices, leather, lamps, rugs, slippers. Get lost on purpose. See our bargaining guide.

  • Bahia Palace

Restored 19th-century palace with painted ceilings and tile courtyards. 70 MAD entry, allow 1 hour.

  • Ben Youssef Madrasa

Quietest beautiful place in the medina. Old Quranic school, intricate plasterwork. 70 MAD, allow 45 min.

  • Jardin Majorelle + YSL Museum

Yves Saint Laurent's blue garden. Book online to skip the line. 150 MAD garden, 150 MAD museum. 1.5 hours.

  • Hammam (traditional bath)

Local (Hammam Mouassine, 50 MAD raw experience) or spa (Les Bains de Marrakech, 600+ MAD). Both worthwhile.

  • Atlas Mountains day trip

Imlil, mule rides, Berber village lunch. The single best day trip in Morocco.

Know before you go

  • The medina is a maze. Download offline maps. Your riad will send a guide to fetch you on arrival.
  • Jemaa el-Fnaa is intense, pickpockets, photo-fee scammers, persistent guides. Bag in front, no phone visible, firm 'la, shukran'.
  • Summer (June–August) is brutal: 42°C+ during the day. Stick to mornings and evenings.
  • Bargain everywhere except food and metered taxis.

Airport

Marrakech Menara (RAK), 6 km from medina
