Fes

The intact medieval city, Morocco's cultural and spiritual capital, with a medina that hasn't changed in 1000 years.

Why visit Fes

If Marrakech is a tourist show, Fes is the real thing. The Fes el-Bali medina is the largest car-free urban area on Earth, 9,000 streets, donkey-cart traffic, leather tanneries still using the same dyes they did in the 11th century. It's harder than Marrakech: less English, more hustle in the medina, the labyrinth is genuinely disorienting. Go anyway.

Who it's for

  • Second-time visitors
  • Culture seekers
  • Photographers
  • History lovers

Neighborhoods

  • Fes el-Bali (old medina)

The original 9th-century city. UNESCO World Heritage. Where you should stay. Bab Boujloud (Blue Gate) is the main entrance.

  • Fes el-Jdid (new medina)

13th-century 'new' town with the Jewish quarter (Mellah) and Royal Palace. Worth a half-day walk.

  • Ville Nouvelle

French colonial district. Modern, residential, where Moroccans actually shop. Skip for first trip.

Top experiences

  • Chouara Tannery

The iconic stone vats of dye. View from leather shop terraces (they hand you a sprig of mint to mask the smell). Most authentic in the morning.

  • Al-Attarine Madrasa

Stunning 14th-century Quranic school. Quieter and arguably more beautiful than the Marrakech equivalent.

  • Bou Inania Madrasa

Cedar, marble, zellige tiles. 70 MAD entry. Allow 45 min.

  • Souks of Fes

Henna souk, copper souk, spice souk, carpenters souk. Better organized than Marrakech's chaos.

  • Volubilis (day trip)

Roman ruins 1 hour north. Surprisingly intact mosaics. Combine with Meknès for a full day.

  • A guide for your first day

Hire a licensed guide for 300–500 MAD for your first 4 hours. Fes is the one city where this dramatically improves your trip, you simply cannot navigate it cold.

Know before you go

  • Fes is HARDER than Marrakech. Less English, narrower streets, no GPS that works reliably.
  • Book a riad transfer from the airport. The medina entrance is 15 minutes from your riad on foot through alleys, you need a porter.
  • The hustle is more aggressive than Marrakech. Practice firm refusals before you arrive.
  • Allow at least 2 full days. Day 1 is just getting oriented.
