Trains in Morocco
Trains are comfortable for major cities. They are best for Casablanca, Rabat, Tangier, Marrakech, Meknes, and Fes. Book first class if you want an assigned seat and more comfort on longer rides.
Buses in Morocco
Buses fill the gaps trains do not cover. They are useful for Essaouira, Chefchaouen, Agadir, and many smaller cities. Tourist-friendly bus companies are usually the easiest option because stations, schedules, and luggage handling are more predictable.
Grand taxis and petit taxis
Petit taxis operate inside cities. Confirm the meter or agree on a price before moving. Grand taxis connect towns and can be shared or hired privately. They are useful but less comfortable if you are carrying luggage or traveling long distances.
Private drivers
A private driver makes sense for Atlas Mountains day trips, multi-stop routes, family travel, and travelers short on time. It costs more, but it removes station logistics and lets you stop for viewpoints, food, and photos.
Should you rent a car?
Rent a car if you want beaches, mountains, small towns, or a flexible road trip. Do not rent a car just to drive inside Marrakech or Fes medinas. Parking and old-city streets can be stressful.
Sahara transport
For Merzouga or Erg Chebbi dunes, do not think of it as a simple transfer. It is a long journey with stops at kasbahs, valleys, gorges, and desert camp. A 3-day shared tour is the easiest budget option; a private driver is the comfortable option.
The honest answer
For a first trip, combine transport types: train between imperial cities, bus to Essaouira or Chefchaouen, tour or private driver to the desert, and taxis for short city hops. That gives you the best balance of price, comfort, and time.
