Three budgets, all in MAD (1 EUR ≈ 11 MAD, 1 USD ≈ 10 MAD as of 2026).

Backpacker, 350–500 MAD / day (€32–€45)

  • Hostel dorm or cheap pension: 100–200 MAD
  • Street food + cheap restaurants: 80–120 MAD (tagine in a local spot is 40–60)
  • Public transport: 30–50 MAD (CTM/Supratours buses, petit taxis)
  • One paid activity per day: 50–100 MAD (souk wander, hammam, museum)
  • Mint tea and small things: 30 MAD

You can absolutely do Morocco on 350 MAD/day if you eat where locals eat and take buses instead of trains.

Mid-range, 800–1200 MAD / day (€72–€110)

  • Riad with breakfast: 400–700 MAD per couple
  • Mix of restaurants and street food: 200–300 MAD
  • Taxis and trains: 100–150 MAD (Marrakech–Fes train is 200 MAD per person, 2nd class)
  • Activities: 200–300 MAD (camel ride, day trip, hammam + scrub)

Cash vs. card

Carry cash. Most restaurants outside top-tier riads, all street food, all taxis, and most souk vendors are cash-only. ATMs are everywhere in cities (Attijariwafa Bank, BMCE, Société Générale) and charge 30 MAD per withdrawal. Get a no-foreign-fee card (Wise, Revolut, Charles Schwab) and pull 2000–3000 MAD at a time.

Cards work in mid-range hotels, modern restaurants, and supermarkets. Visa is more accepted than Mastercard. Amex is rarely accepted.

Hidden costs to expect

  • Tipping, see our tipping guide. Adds ~5–10% to costs.
  • “Guide” fees in medinas, say no firmly, or pay 50–100 MAD upfront and you’ll be left alone.
  • Riad transfers, 200–400 MAD from airport to medina if your riad arranges. Petit taxi off the street is half that.
  • Photo tax, Jemaa el-Fnaa snake charmers, water sellers, and monkeys will demand 20–50 MAD if you photograph them. Negotiate before clicking.
